One Brain, Hundreds of Eyes: Darpa Plots Manhunt Master Controller

Thought military tracking technology couldn’t get any creepier? Hold onto your tinfoil hats and hide behind the nearest curtain because the next generation of manhunting gear just took another step closer to reality.

The Pentagon’s bleeding-edge research shop, Darpa, announced this week that it awarded a $14 million contract to defense contractor SAIC to build Insight, its system-of-systems effort to mashup snooping sensors that’ll find human prey on the battlefield.

Darpa has developed loads of sensors and spying gear: everything from from the 1.8-gigapixel Argus camera to the Vehicle and Dismount Exploitation Radar (given the wonderful acronym, “Vader”) that pinpoints humans, cars and trucks from a distance. But getting all these systems to mesh together so that your average grunt can form a picture clear enough to track a high value terrorist or insurgent in real time is tricky, to say the least. It’s a classic problem in intelligence work: too much information and too much trouble connecting the dots. The result is “information overload” in general, and “information underload” on specific targets.

And that’s the problem that Darpa wants Insight to solve. It’s supposed to help users sift through the heaps of information collected by the U.S. military’s numerous sensor platforms to find just the right information, on just the right targets using the most appropriate combination of spying gear.

Darpa wants Insight to integrate data from a dizzying array of sources. It’s hungry for info from ground moving target indicators, infrared video, multispectral imagery, human tipsters, audio intercepts, even text chats and social media, among others. The idea, though, isn’t to configure the program for a fixed set of inputs, but allow it to be flexible enough to “plug and play” with different sensors as needs dictate.

But Insight isn’t just supposed to be a warehouse for all the data soaked up by the military’s eyes and ears. It’s supposed to make sense of it, too. In a notice to researchers, Darpa states that the system needs to be able to perform “threat network detection/estimation,” “anomaly detection” and ”behavioral (pattern-of-life) modeling including cultural, social, and insurgency dynamics.” In other words, Insight needs to get a feel for the rhythm of life in the areas it’s looking at, understand what kinds of threats its users are interested in and be able to automatically pick them out of the heaps of data and background noise.

Just so Insight isn’t running off its own smarts alone, Darpa’s planning a number of tools to aid the human-software collaboration, including “visualization, hypothesis manipulation, and on-line learning” as well as other “algorithms and data processing technologies.”

So how will Insight be used on the battlefield? Think high value targets, for one. Darpa says its spy system needs to be able to track so-called “high value individuals” and insurgents, even over the long term, across a range of settings from rural to urban. Insight’s also supposed to be capable enough to think one step ahead of the threats it tracks and anticipate their next move, like sniffing out a possible ambush.

On the ground, it would play out like this. An analyst adds to a watch list the name of a particularly important insurgent. A sensor picks up someone who might be him driving past a checkpoint in Iraq. Insight automatically recognizes that he’ll soon drive out of range of the current sensor and switches over to a new snooping device closer by to pick him up down the road. It follows him as he picks up associates and drives to a meeting, keeping a constant watch on him as it shifts from sensor data to communications intercepts to the real-time reports of spies on the ground, ultimately verifying his identity.

A system this complex, you can’t just dump in Iraq or Afghanistan. So Darpa is looking to set up an “incubator” — a sort of virtual world, where all these sensors and sensor-integrators can be tested out first. The pixelized place will pit the system against a battery of simulated sensor data and information collected from real world threats to see how it performs at tracking threats. Once it’s finished in the virtual world, it’s moves to meatspace testing at the Army’s National Training Center in Ft. Irwin, California. Only then would it go to an honest-to-God war zone.

That was a statement issued exactly five years ago Tuesday by Kori Bernards, a spokeswoman for the Motion Picture Association of America.

After all, Swedish police that day had just raided the file sharing site’s offices and carted away a boatload of servers.

After all, Swedish police that day had just raided the file sharing site’s offices and carted away a boatload of servers.

Dan Glickman, the MPAA’s chairman at the time, also said something ironic that day.

“The actions today taken in Sweden serve as a reminder to pirates all over the world that there are no safe harbors for internet copyright thieves,” he said.

But the site was back online three days later, after finding hosting in the Netherlands.

And today, after playing cat-and-mouse games to defy court orders to shutter, the site is hosted by the Pirate Party — despite the raid leading to the arrest and convictions of the site’s four founders who face prison and multimillion-dollar fines.

The Pirate Bay, now 8 years old, sports some 25 million unique users. The site, at one point up for sale, acts as a conduit enabling the online pirating of videogames, movies, music and software, using the BitTorrent protocol.

Torrent Freak notes that the site is upgrading its hardware, housed in an undisclosed mountain cave in southern Sweden, “in order to keep serving the ever-growing number of users.”

Pirate Bay administrators Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg and Peter Sunde were found guilty of facilitating copyright infringement in 2009, along with Carl Lundström, who was convicted of funding the operation. They were each sentenced to a year in prison and $3.8 million in fines. They said the court system was biased against them.

The Stockholm prosecution was brought by the Swedish government and Hollywood, in what’s best described as a joint civil-criminal trial. The defendants were charged with facilitating copyright infringement. They remain free, pending appeal to Sweden’s highest court.

Samsung demande à voir le prochain iPhone et iPad d’Apple !

Dans un renvoi d’ascenseur prévisible, l’équipe juridique de Samsung a demandé à Apple de lui remettre la version de la prochaine génération de l’iPhone et iPad pour s’assurer que ses propres dispositifs futurs ne seront pas soumis à la même infraction d’imitation (dans le cadre de la poursuite exécutée par Apple le mois dernier).

La motion, déposée le vendredi dernier auprès de la Cour fédérale de district de San Jose, en Californie, et révélée par This Is My Next, demande au tribunal que Apple fournisse des échantillons de la « version commerciale finale » de l’iPhone et l’iPad, ainsi que tout emballage de vente des « iDevices ». Là encore, ces produits ne sont pas annoncés, ils pourront se nommer, comme on l’a déjà vu dans les rumeurs, « iPhone 4S » ou « iPhone 5? et pour l’iPad « iPad 3? ou « iPad third generation ».

Les nouvelles viennent une semaine qu’après Apple ait déposé une requête pour voir des échantillons de la production finale de certains produits inédits Samsung, y compris les Galaxy Tab 10.1 et 8.9, et les téléphones intelligents comme le Galaxy II S, Droid de charge, et 4G Infuse . L’idée derrière cela était d’évaluer si ces dispositifs relèvent les mêmes allégations d’infraction à la propriété intellectuelle d’Apple.

Nilay Patel, de This Is My Next, souligne que, la manipulation d’Apple pour voir les produits inédits de Samsung, n’est pas équilibrée: la demande Samsung ne demande qu’à ce que ses avocats inspectent l’iPhone et l’iPad, et non pas des équipes de produits de la société autorisés à voir les périphériques Apple. Cela dit, les représailles se nourrissent de l’élément de surprise, historiquement parlant, l’une des plus grandes forces d’Apple lors du lancement de nouveaux produits.

Le procès d’Apple contre Samsung, en avril, a allégué que Samsung avait copié les appareils mobiles d’Apple à la fois en termes d’interface utilisateur et les fonctionnalités de conception. Apple a également allégué que les appareils Samsung en question ont enfreint les brevets de la firme à la pomme , et Samsung a abouti à une concurrence déloyale. Samsung a riposté en lançant une vague de procès en contrefaçon de brevet visant les produits d’Apple dans plusieurs pays.

L’affaire continue de susciter un vif intérêt des spectateurs tech. Alors que les deux entreprises sont en concurrence, Apple et Samsung est un partenaire de longue date avec Apple qui utilise des composants Samsung dans nombre de ses appareils. Néanmoins, la relation n’a pas tenu Samsung et son groupe de télécommunications d’être ciblées.

Les caractéristiques des deux appareils ne sont pas connus, mais il est probable que la tablette numérique tire parti du processeur du smartphone. De ce fait, le Padfone pourrait ne pas fonctionner de manière autonome. Un orifice placé sur le couvercle de la tablette montre d'ailleurs que la tablette utilisera l'appareil numérique du téléphone portable.

Piratage de données Sony annonce le retour complet du PSN

Victime des pirates informatiques depuis avril dernier, le PlayStation Network va enfin revenir à la normale. Toutes les fonctionnalités du système en ligne seront en effet rétablies d'ici la fin de la semaine, a annoncé le géant de l'électronique dans un communiqué. La restauration concernera tous les pays du monde couverts par Sony, hormis le Japon, Hong Kong et la Corée du Sud. Les joueurs de ces pays asiatiques devront encore faire preuve de patience avant de bénéficier de tous les services de Sony.

Après un retour progressif de ses services en ligne, depuis la mi-mai, Sony va finalement réactiver les fonctionnalités complètes du PlayStation Store, le commerce in-game, l'utilisation des codes et des bons d’achat, les fonctionnalités du service Music Unlimited proposées par Qriocity pour la PS3, PSP, VAIO et les autres PC, ainsi que celles de Media Go, indique la société.

Pour rappel, Sony a été l'objet à la mi-avril de l'une des pires séries d'attaques jamais enregistrées sur la toile, avec le vol d'informations concernant quelque 100 millions d'utilisateurs du PSN, de Qriocity et de sa plate-forme de jeux en ligne pour ordinateur, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).
